14、er, the FDArevealed that 82 patients had developed defects in their heart values while onfen-phen, and that seven patients had come down with the same condition onRedux. As if that werent bad enough, physicians reported that a womanwho had been taking fen-phen for less than a month died of primarypu

15、lmonary hypertension, a sometimes fatal lung condition already associatedwith Redux. And an article in the Journal of the American MedicalAssociation last month confirmed earlier reports that both fen-phen andRedux can cause brain damage in lab animals. These findings led the NewEngland Journal to p

16、ublish editorial admonishing doctors to prescribe thedrugs only for patients with severe obesity. Meanwhile, FDA asked drugmakers to put more explicit warnings on fen-phen and Redux labels. Sincemid-July, prescriptions for fen-phen have dropped 56%, and those for Redux36%, according to IMS America,

17、a pharmaceutical market research firm.Manufacturers said from the start that their pills offered a short-term therapyfor the obese.FDA approved Redux with just such a caveat, and when limitedto these patients, the drugs may still make sense despite the risks becausemorbid obesity carries its own dan

18、gers, including heart disease, diabetes andstroke. Too often, however, Redux and fen-phen were peddled to all comers,almost like candy.
