、 ContextontextThe Shanghai International Medical Zoneis an 11.51 square kilometer propertylocated approximately 20 km southeast ofthe Bund. The existing primary land useis farmland. The property sits within the NanhuiDistrict of Shanghai. It is 2 km south ofan entrance to Shanghais outer looproad. No

、rmal driving time during rushhour to the City Center is approximately30-40 minutes. The site is also 19 kmwestsouth of the Pudong InternationalAirport and 36 km northwest of the newLuchao Port. The proposed adjacent land uses include:science and technology developmentzones to the north; a site reserv

The general Nanhui Districtplanning guidelines state that planningconcepts should reflect man inharmonious co-existence with nature. The guidelines call for an increase inwoode

、rest ofShanghai. It has grade-separatedinterchanges with two east-west arterials:Zhoudeng Road in the northern edge ofthe property, and Shenzhu Road on thesouthern edge. Between these twoarterial is Zhouzhu Road, which traversesthe project site through the center andwhich provides east-west access f

Themajor access points to the project site arealong these three arterials. Secondaryaccess points are along Chuangye Roadrunning north-south throug

Stationsare located proximately 1 km both eastand west of the site. The property is flat and since it is part ofthe Yangtze River delta,

、 is about 4 metersabove sea level. Therefore, the site has ahigh water table and poor geotechnicalconditions. There are few trees on thesite, but it is fertile and can support a richlandscape environment. There are four major canals that traversethe site in roughly an east-west direction. These canals

It is assumed that all otherexisting structures will be demolished.UtilityUtility I InfrastructurenfrastructureIt is assumed that all of the major utilities(water, sewer, power, gas, etc.)

、LANLAN?15ConceptConcept D DevelopmentevelopmentUnlike virtually every other majormedical complex in the world today, theShanghai International Medical Zone hasan extraordinary opportunity in itsphysical setting. Instead of being locatedin a dense urban setting where thephysical environment is more a

、 problemthan a health benefit, the large naturalsetting of the medical garden allows it todemonstrate how a health complex cantruly be healthful and green. The association of good health withnature is a strong one. Traditionalmedicine, including Chinese medicine, has always linked natural ingredients

、andnatural processes with well being andrecovery from illnesses. In todaysstressful world, the benefits of a relaxedgreen environment have become evenmore important. The foundation for that structure begins inthe important first stage. As called for inthe program, the overall developmentwill expand

、from west to east. The initialfocal point will be in the northwestquadrant, on the side of the developmentclosest to Shanghai. As the growth of the medical zoneexpands from this starting point, we areproposing that the key organizingstructure be rings of green radiatingoutward through the site - arc

、s ofwoodland, parks, meadows, orchards, gardens and other natural features thatboth symbolically and functionally createa dramatic nature-linked identity for thisunique health community. Like the ringsof growth in the trunk of a tree, the greencircular pattern becomes the definingstructure of ongoing

、 growth, permanentlylinking the facilities of the medicalgarden to a beautiful naturalenvironment. For a community based onhealth and well being, its structure, appropriately, is a tree of life. The circle has been a recurring theme inurban development history, both in Chinaand in many other cultures.

、 But thesecircular patterns have typically definedthe hard man-made parts of theenvironment. For the ShanghaiInternational Medical Zone in its exurbannatural setting, we are proposing thatradiating circles define the soft greenelements, permanently associating thegarden with the life-giving forces o

、fnature. The pattern of radiating circles is not justsymbolically important - it is also veryfunctional. The swaths of green formboundaries between the districts withinthe medical garden, giving each of thema stronger presence as well as a closeaccess to nature for patients, visitors, staff, and resid

、ents. The green areas willbe different from each other, givingunique character to different parts of thedevelopment and, collectively, offeringmany choices for people to enjoy.Strategically placed woodlands, parksand the other high green componentsalso serve as windbreaks, helping tocreate better mi

、croclimates within theoverall site. The green zones also help tomaintain good air quality, absorbingcarbon dioxide, giving off oxygen, andfiltering some elements of air pollution.Circles have radials, and in our conceptplan radials have been used to defineaxes between key areas of the medicalgarden:

、 between the two main hospitals, for example, and between the centralhospital and the medical school campus.Other radials define the axis of importantviews or highlight prominent buildings.16? ? ? ? ?17building program. With such a largevolume of new development, the medicalgarden can take advantage

、of large scalemethods of water and energyconservation and efficient use ofresources. These details are set out in theSustainability section of our proposal. They aim not only at reducing theenvironmental impact of the futuredevelopment program but also atimproving the current environment, suchas the

、water quality in the canals thattraverse the site. The medical garden cancontribute to a more garden-likeenvironment for everyone. Most importantly, the large areas left asopen space build in the flexibility torespond to growth and change. All greatmedical campuses have to grow andchange. The dedicat

、nment ofShanghai gives it an extraordinaryopportunity to lead the world in medicalknowledge and practice as well as indemonstrating an exciting differentbuilding environment. We believe ourmulti-layered concept plan achieves thatgoal.ConceptConcept D DevelopmentevelopmentThe curves and radials of th

、e plan alsoopen a variety of opportunities to createdramatic building designs. Somebuildings follow the curvature of thepattern; others have been positionedalong, or at the end of, main axes. The circular pattern of our concept alsocreates opportunities at the smaller scalesof the medical garden. In

、some of thelong curving green spaces of our conceptplan, we have created parks with largescale undulating land formations. The strong reference to nature in ourplanning concept will distinguish theShanghai International Medical Zone andhelp give it a widespread appeal andunique identity in the world.

、 This veryvisible emphasis is counterbalanced by astrong foundation of modern medicalplanning. To achieve prominence, advanced technology will clearly have tobe a major part of medical services andthe related support services, R & D, andproduction. We see this technicaldimension being carried over in

、to thebuilding fabric in a way that is respectfulof the natural environment. The International Medical Zone shouldnot only be a delightful greenenvironment but should also incorporatebuilding and construction technologythat contributes to a healthierenvironment for those, near or far away, that would

This matrix isthe result of a multi-layered compositionconsisting of: the

、 existing canal network, the expanded canal and waterwaynetwork, the existing and new grid ofroads, and lastly, a calculated grid ofconcentric circles and radii. The structureof this plan is validated through anecological understanding of both the siteand the program, which in turn givesshape to the
